What we’re building at Smirk Software

TLDR: We’re working on games and hiring a founding engineer.
I first started working on games in 2016 with Kevin Jonas. We got to the top of the app store, which was fun, but I really dug into games with BlockCities.
We wanted to bring NFTs to the masses with architecture collectibles and a SimCity-like building game.
It didn’t work (even though the NFTs are still traded today). But, through that process I became obsessed with social apps and “spatial software.”
I started to believe that the future of social is in spaces we can all share together, move around in, and ultimately play.
So that’s what Smirk Software is, a new company to work on games—specifically, multiplayer games.
Games as Social
I think games are the most fun way to hangout online. It’s like your favorite group chat, but you can move and play.
It doesn’t just amplify real life, like TikTok or Instagram, but enables a totally new vicarious experience.
It’s live action role-play. Work in an ice cream shop. Drive lambos. Build whatever world you want.
And this is already working.
Roblox and their 200M monthly actives prove that people love user-generated games and want a role in creating them.
Despite poor graphics and shallow gameplay, it’s still the best place to be online when you come home from school and want to be with your friends again.
That’s what I want to work on, but bring it to mobile, so that anyone can make these games—no matter if they code or not.
Roblox brought millions of creators into game development, but that’s not the end of this story.
The next wave of gaming is a set of easy-to-use building blocks for anyone to make insanely fun multiplayer games with their friends.
Build. Battle. Race.
Be with friends wherever you are, create with them, and compete against them.
That is the future of games, and one we will build.
Come Build it
Here’s your part… if you can code, come build it.
If you want to define this future, DM me or email at preston @ smirk.gg
I’m looking for an engineer who wants to be the best product engineer on earth. Namely someone who can make swift apps and JS games—or can learn quickly.
If you want to be the next Michel Krieger or Bobby Murphy, this is the place to do it.
We’re backed by the Dune Ventures and Lightshed Ventures, investors in games and apps you love.
Cheers 🍻
